Youthful lips are an important feature of an attractive face. This surgery is also a frequent request in cosmetic surgery. Lips can be enhanced, reduced, reshaped and lip wrinkles can be removed. There are easy methods that can be used, such as injections that can bring marvelous and immediate results when the correction needed is minor. If the scale of correction is greater, dermal grafts or implants must be used.
INJECTIONS
Injections involve filling material that is implanted into the dermis with a needle to either gently augment the volume, make the vermilion border more defined, or to correct wrinkles. These materials come from animals, bacteria or can be synthetic. Some are temporary and last between 3 to 6 months, and can be repeated as many time as desired. A low rate of allergy exists with Collagen, while newer materials like Restylane or Hylaform appear to have no allergic response. Artecoll brings about a permanent correction. It contains methacrylate microspheres that are synthetic and remain in the dermis. Many patients start with a temporary correction and then move to the permanent one if satisfied with the improvements obtained. Fat injections are not predictable and often cause firm lumps (granulomas) in the lips.
DERMAL GRAFT
When more volume is wanted, a dermal graft can be introduced into the lips. A piece of skin is then removed from some hidden area of the body, the epidermis is removed and the dermis alone is grafted into the lips. A small scar is left where the graft has been harvested, however, many patients prefer this to introducing foreign material to their body. A Dermal Graft brings nice results and is all natural. It is considered permanent but some volume is, in fact, lost over the years.
IMPLANTS
Synthetic material can also be used to augment lips, in the form of a small tube that allows tissue ingrowth (Softform). Other materials exist also. It is implanted through a small incision and some tunneling. No visible scar is left, which is the obvious advantage. This procedure is well tolerated by the body.
WRINKLES
Wrinkles can begin to happen quite early around the lips. Laser resurfacing can be used to treat these, though dermabrasion (sanding) could be preferred if wrinkles are too deep. Peeling or injections can also be useful, depending upon the situation. In all cases, a thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon is recommended.
