Tummy Tuck Header

When skin is sagging in the lower abdomen following weight gain, weight loss or pregnancies, a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is indicated. Usually accompanied by liposuction, the tummy tuck differs from this by the long transverse scar that it leaves just above the pubis, from one hip to the other. When loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles or stretch marks make liposuction a suboptimal choice, this incision allows Dr. Frenette to remove excess skin and tighten skin and muscles. The incision heals in two weeks but the scar takes between 8 to 12 months to mature from red and elevated to white and even. A bikini can easily cover the final scar.

This operation is a step up from liposuction alone, and could require a two to three week recovery before returning to work. If the loose skin is limited to the area below the navel, a mini-abdominoplasty may be the operation of choice. In this case, the surgery is less extensive, the scar is shorter and local anesthesia may be used. The recovery time is easier and shorter. A regular abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia.

A full examination and consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon is a necessary first step if considering this type of surgery.
